One minute your child is obsessed with tractors, next they're asking a million questions about sharks before breakfast. Sound familiar? Well, parents, we are here to help!
Children love to show us what they're interested in. The trick isn't finding something for them to learn about, it's spotting what they're already excited about and jumping on board.
You don't need a teaching degree, a Pinterest-worthy activity setup, or expert knowledge of every dinosaur that ever walked the Earth. Sometimes, all you need to do is follow their lead, (and maybe a quick Google search so you have a few facts up your sleeve).
We’ve put together some actionable tips to help you support your child’s interests.
1. Jump into their world
Your child doesn't care if you're a dinosaur expert or a unicorn whisperer (although that would be pretty cool).
What matters to them is that you join in.
Ask questions. Look things up together. Pretend to be a farmer if they're currently living their best tractor life. Your enthusiasm (real or slightly exaggerated) shows them that what they love matters.
You'll probably learn a thing or two along the way. For example, did you know there’s over 500 species of shark? Well now you do.
2. Pay attention to the obsessions
You know the book. The one you've read so many times you can recite it in your sleep.
When children keep returning to the same topic it's usually because something about it has really captured their imagination - just run with it and see where it goes - it won’t last forever.
3. Sneak learning into everyday adventures
We all know that learning doesn't actually need to look like learning. You can chat about insects while you're in the garden. Count diggers on the school run. Spot birds in the park. Look for the moon on an evening walk.
Children learn brilliantly when their interests pop up naturally throughout the day, and it's a lot more fun than sitting at a table with a worksheet!
4. Expect the plot twist
Just when you've become a dinosaur expert, your little one may suddenly decide that space is their entire personality! And that's perfectly normal. Don’t worry, those facts you learnt about dinosaurs might pop up in a pub quiz at some point.
Children's interests change, grow, and sometimes disappear overnight. Following those twists and turns keeps learning fresh, exciting, and full of surprises. They're always keeping us on our toes!
5. Let books do the heavy lifting
Books are one of the easiest ways to dive deeper into a child's favourite topic and open up whole new worlds to explore.
And the best part is that while you're enjoying a story or activity together, your child is building vocabulary, exploring new ideas, and developing critical thinking skills without even realising it. Win win!
